What happens with tables, footnotes and citations?

Tables, figures, page numbers, running headers, reference lists and citation markers are skipped when your document is read aloud, so sentences aren't broken up. When it can't tell whether something is a citation, it reads it. Everything stays on the page, where you can look at it.
