Check official audio first. OpenStax lists browser text-to-speech, Bookshare formats, partner audiobooks, and platform accessibility tools on its audio options page.

Use the web view when structure matters. OpenStax says the online web view is currently its most accessible format and can retain headings, image alternatives, and MathML that a linear MP3 may omit.

Convert only after the license check. If no suitable audio exists and the intended use is allowed, test one chapter before a full conversion. Keep the official source beside the audio and verify reading order and pronunciation.

Treat public sharing as a separate decision. A public audio link is distribution, not private study. Confirm attribution, NonCommercial, ShareAlike, institutional, and third-party content obligations before sharing.

License check before conversion

Identify the exact title and edition. OpenStax announced a 2026 transition to CC BY-NC-SA for newly released and updated books, with limited exceptions. The notice on the specific book remains the source of truth.

Write down the purpose. Creative Commons says NonCommercial turns on whether the use is primarily directed toward commercial advantage or monetary compensation, not simply whether the user is a company or nonprofit. Ask the rights holder about ambiguous uses.

Separate private listening from redistribution. A private study copy and a publicly shared audiobook are different uses. Publishing, monetizing, or distributing an adaptation creates additional duties.

Preserve the official attribution. Open the Citation/Attribution menu at the bottom of the online book page and copy its exact pre-formatted notice.

Check the license on the exact book and edition.

Check official audio, Bookshare, and web-view options first.

Confirm that the intended use is noncommercial or separately permitted.

Save the exact pre-formatted OpenStax attribution.

Keep the original source for figures, MathML, tables, and citations.

Do not publish or share generated audio until redistribution rights are clear.
