Reading Time Calculator

A reading time calculator estimates how long a document will take to read or listen to based on the word count and a chosen reading or listening speed. The average adult reads at 200-250 words per minute; college students average around 300 words per minute; comfortable listening at normal speed is 150-160 words per minute, rising to 225-300 words per minute at 1.5x to 2x playback. Paste text or enter a word count and the tool returns reading time, audio listening time, and a quick estimate of how much study time the document requires.

How to use the reading time calculator

  1. Paste your text into the textarea, or enter a word or page count directly.
  2. Adjust the words-per-minute slider to match your reading speed. The default is 238 WPM (a common adult average).
  3. See reading time and audio listening time update side by side. Audio time includes a typical playback-speed estimate.
  4. Plan your study session around the result, or convert the PDF to audio with the PDF to audio converter if you want to listen instead of read.

For dense academic texts, expect to read 150-200 words per minute with high comprehension; for casual reading 250-300 words per minute is typical. Listening at 1x is slower than reading, but you can multitask, which is why students often add audio to commutes, gym sessions, and chores.
